Black wedding dresses

Post by Hephaestion on Tue Mar 25, 2008 11:25 am

İzmir-based firm exports black dresses to 17 countries

A bridal wear company based in İzmir is exporting black wedding dresses to 17 countries including the United States, Lebanon, Israel and Mozambique.

“We initiated the production of black wedding dresses in February and presented them at the IF Wedding Fashion İzmir the same month,” said Erol Güney, shareholder of Image Wedding Dresses. Foreign businessmen who visited the fair showed a surprising level of interest in this design, said Güney who signed an agreement with Dark Bright, an American company, for the export of the dresses. He said they also met with businessmen from the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Lebanon, Kuwait and Mozambique, as well as European countries like Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and France, all of whom showed interest in black wedding dresses.

Güney said that as of Feb. 17, the factory, which employs 23 workers, had exported 2,500 wedding dresses to Germany, Belgium and France. “Our goal is to sell 7,500 dresses this year at home and abroad,” he said, adding that the black wedding dresses have changed the scope and nature of their business. He said the company also sends dresses to 20 distributors within Turkey. Güney said white and black wedding dresses are in the same price range, between YTL 400-1,400.

The bridal wear market has a $500 million potential in Turkey. The estimated export market for bridal wear was $20 million in 2006. The Middle East, the Balkans, the Caucasus and the Mediterranean are the main regions targeted for export.

Around 700,000 couples get married in Turkey every year and 450,000 wedding dresses are sold, while 250,000 are rented. İzmir is the main supplier of bridal wear and evening gowns with a 70 percent market share. Istanbul is the second largest supplier with 20 percent. Around 1,000 companies are active in the industry and 400 of them are located in İzmir.

I never noticed any black wedding dresses at the IF Wedding Fair, but would definitely have been interested in seeing them. N
Not everyone wants to be married in white. I love you

No and it´s nice to mix traditions up from time to time. I believe over here that black was the wedding dress colour in pre Victorian times so it´s not as though that White has always been the colour. So it just goes to show...perhaps black is the new white.

I never noticed any black wedding dresses, but at first I thought the coloured engagment dresses were wedding dresses, so maybe I did see it but paid no notice thinking that it was an engagement dress, Must ask Elaine, lol she missed nothing.

It’s wedding show season in Paris, and one of the more surprising trends for 2008 is the black wedding dress. From well-known couturiers like Max Chaoul to more moderately priced dress labels like Creations Bochet, when it comes to choosing a wedding dress in France, black seems to be the new white. Cymbeline Paris has gone so far as to have 4 different black dresses in their 2008 collection! As most U.S. metropolises seem to look to Paris for their fashion inspiration, I’d be interested to hear what American brides think about this “tendance“: Oui or Non, will the black wedding dress be the next trend to walk down American aisles?

Chris the Paris wedding dresses look like they come from Turkey. A lot of Italian and french wedding dresses are made in Turkey and have Made in Italy etc sewn inside. I was even offered this service when I was there.

Really? Wow I´m actually very surprised by that information Majella! Is this a trade secret? Gosh what a load of snobbery when it comes down to it. I guess the actual designs are Italian but they are made in Turkey. I hope Turkey claims it right as the land of fashion´s.

Beautiful dress btw! It is very elegant & sophisticated in an understated way. It looks a bit victorian.

I have been to three weddings in the last few weeks (eek the cost the cost!!), and all three had bridesmaids dressed in black although the bride stuck to traditional White. The other trend was that two were mid week which limits the alchol consumption a bit with work the next morning and one had a "bridesman" (her brother) rather than a bridesmaid. Different - and just in case you are wondering - he wore a black suit.
